Mukhtar Mai Girl’s Model School is the foundation of Mukhtar Mai Women’s Organization. MMWO believes that access to quality education for girls is essential for guaranteeing women full exercise of their civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights.
After receiving retributions from the government for her personal attack in 2003, Mukhtar Mai began a lifetime campaign of promoting and defending women’s rights in Pakistan. She decided that the first and most important step in empowering women is to educate them.
In 2003, Muktar opened her first school, enrolling herself and two other students in one room of her family house.
Today, this has been transformed into Mukhtar Mai Girl’s Model School, providing free education, with free books. supplies, and uniforms, to over 550 girls from nursery school to grade 10. MMWO additionally provides a free shuttle service to safely transport the students and teachers to and from their homes.
In 2008, a second girl’s school was opened in Gabar Arani. This school has been temporarily closed due to damage from the flooding. Continue to check the website and Mukhtar Mai’s Twitter for updates.
